Dutch Oven Cooking
According to the history books, in 1704 an Englishman by the name of Abraham Darby traveled to the Netherlands and learned their system of making a black pot. Four years later, in 1708, he patented the technique for making cast iron pots. Perhaps that is how the pots became known as “Dutch ovens.” As time went on, improvements were added. When the first colonists arrived in the New World, they brought their Dutch ovens with them.

Over time legs were added, then a handle and finally a lip to hold the coals better.
Anything you can cook in your oven at home, you can cook in a Dutch Oven. We learned about Dutch Ovens from our involvement in Scouts. There is an entire group of people across the country who enjoy sharing and meet periodically to socialize and cook and share ideas. Dutch Oven gatherings or DOGS for short have been taking place for many years and quite possibly holds the largest black pot luck dinner you could ever imagine!
