The Great Sand Dunes National Park

Drove 3 hours from Pueblo on July 31st to see this amazing national park! Nestled against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Great Sand Dunes are the North America’s tallest and are 11 percent of a 330 square mile deposit of sand. Eroded from mountains, shattered by freezing and thawing, then tumbled by streams and winds, sand grains cycle through the dunes system.

Where the people are standing is a flowing stream in the spring. The water is a vital component to the dunes. We used our hands to move sand and you could see the life giving moisture right below the surface.

Such delicate plants grow there with very little water.

Definitely worth the trip to this national park!
