Sadly the Alliance RV Rally was in our rearview mirror but happily the Mississippi River is in full view! We arrived at Grant River Recreation area in Pocosi, Wisconsin on Sunday the 4th.
This is our second US Army Corps of Engineers campground of this trip and they do not disappoint. We have a campsite with full view of the river. How beautiful. This is my first encounter with this river. There is so much history to learn about it. What I know so far is that it is over 2,000 miles long, 2348 to be exact. It's source is Lake Itasca in Northern Minnesota and ends in the Gulf of Mexico. It runs through 10 states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowas, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
I have learned there are 3 eagle nests very close by but of course with my bad luck I have not seen an eagle close up yet. I have seen a few herons and other birds though.
Tom claims he booked this part of the trip because of the National Brewery Museum! So we went and visited it on Tuesday. It was very interesting. The museum is housed in the historic Potosi Brewing Company building. The building is from 1853 and was a brewery in full operation until 1972. It was amazing to see how they made the barrels and cut blocks of ice from frozen rivers. The building sat in disrepair until 2008 when the Potosi Foundation renovated it and started brewing again. Their site was chosen to be the home of the National Brewery Museum. The brewery is the only not for profit brewery and their proceeds go to various charitable causes and they employ disabled people as well. What a find!
Back in the 1800's they used this cave to age the beer.
While in Elkhart for the rally we camped at the fairgrounds which was very close to train tracks and we heard trains all day and all night. Arriving at this campground we were laughing because the train tracks are even closer here. Ahh I have grown accustomed and fond of these trains even in the middle of the night.
